Indigenous Peoples' Day 2024!
Greetings R.E.D. Community,
Apologies for the sideways flier! Old website needing to be revamped, but we wanted to get the information out there!
We're very happy to announce the inception of a two-day expanded Indigenous Peoples' Day celebration this year! As many of you know, R.E.D. has supported IPD on the Southern Oregon University campus for many years, ever since devoted activists and elders fought hard to replace "Columbus Day" in October with IPD. SOU and the City of Ashland no longer call it "Columbus Day," as that ship has sailed! Rather, we have collaborated with SOU, local municipalities, community allies and local schools to celebrate IPD as a way to raise awareness for Indigenous Peoples far and wide, and to honor the lands on which we live to be the original homes for Indigenous tribal folks whose ancestors go back to time immemorial.
With the inception and introduction of a Native Nations Liaison position at SOU this past year, we are happy to recognize the progress SOU has made toward honoring Indigenous roots and values, and also honored to introduce Kenwani Kravitz as the lead on this gathering and SOU's first Native Nations Liaison, working directly under the SOU President to elevate Indigenous issues, rights, inclusivity and standards for our Native students, staff, faculty and our Indigenous community.
R.E.D. is recruiting volunteers and participants for this year's IPD weekend, October 19 and 20. Please see attached fliers for more information. Also see the online vendor form if you're interested in being a vendor (please note: vending is open to Native artisans only--in the spirit of celebrating IPD, we ask that this request be honored).
